When the milestone arrives and the feeling doesn’t
Leon came in expecting to be talked out of his disappointment. Instead we spent time taking it seriously. He had achieved the thing, and the quiet that followed was not ingratitude—it was information. Beneath the achievement was a life he had never actually designed, only postponed.
We slowed the story down to the ordinary details: what he did on Sunday afternoons, who he spoke to outside of work, when he last did something badly and enjoyed it anyway. The gaps were obvious once they were named out loud.
Building a life at human scale
Loneliness responded to small, repeatable things rather than grand plans. A standing Thursday climbing session. Two friendships he chose to maintain properly instead of six he maintained badly. A weekend with nothing scheduled that he learned to tolerate, then to like.
By the end of our work, the new city had stopped being a place he had moved to and become a place he lived. Ambition stayed. It simply stopped being the only thing holding his week together.
